Haematology & Bone Marrow Transplant

Technology & expertise to beat life-threatening conditions.

The Department of Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant deals with complicated ailments related to the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes. The diseases could be of a malignant or benign nature. They include cancers like leukemia (blood cancer), lymphoma and myeloma. Non-cancerous diseases of the blood include bone marrow failure (aplastic anaemia), anaemia due to inherited disorders like thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia and bleeding disorders like hemophilia and immune thrombocytopenic purpura.

OPD: Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm
Day care chemotherapy
Day care bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
Lumbar puncture for CSF analysis and intrathecal instillation of chemotherapy
Bone marrow transplantation
24-hour blood bank with availability of all blood components (packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrates, cryoprecipitate, single donor platelets, granulocyte collection, stem cell collection and storage of cryopreserved stem cells at 80 degree Celsius)
Cytogenetic, flow cytometry and molecular studies done at reputed institutes (Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai; Christian Medical College, Vellore; and Ranbaxy Lab, Mumbai)
Radiation therapy
Inpatient general ward, private rooms, deluxe rooms and special ward for neutropenic patients
HEPA filtered rooms
Apheresis machine (Fresenius Kabi) used for peripheral blood stem cell collection, single donor platelet collection, granulocyte collection and plasmapheresis
Multispecialty consultations round-the-clock with 24-hour emergency services
24-hour biochemistry, pathology and microbiology laboratory (NABL accredited)
Complete coagulation workup (Factor assays) available round the clock

State-of-the-art Coagulation Lab

We are proud of the fact that we are the first hospital in Southern Tamil Nadu to have a state of the art coagulation laboratory which can do comprehensive coagulation factor assays. We can also do surgeries for Hemophiliacs as we have the facilities to monitor factor levels. Various bleeding disorders managed include Hemophilia, Von Willebrand Disease, Factor VII deficiency, Factor V deficiency, platelet function disorders like bernad Solier syndrome and Glanzmen Thrombasthenia.

Dedicated Oncology Ward

We have a dedicated oncology ward, which caters to the Acute leukemias and Lymphomas. The nurses are trained to handle central venous catheters and peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) with sterile precautions. We also have the opportunity to keep the severely neutropenic patients in the HEPA filtered unit. So the chance of acquiring invasive fungal infections is minimized.

We have state-of-the-art infrastructure necessary for bone marrow transplantation that include

18 bedded HEPA filtered transplant unit, 24 hour regional blood bank, 3 state of the art apheresis machines (COBE Spectra and Fresinius Kabil), facility to irradiate blood products and deep freezers to store cryopreserved stem cells.
